Culture night was particularly stand out this year because it was also our 3rd birthday! What an insane 3 years it's been!
As always thank you so much for supporting us since we opened our doors back in 2014. We can't thank you enough for all of your likes, shares, sales, and visits! We wouldn't have made it this far without you guys and we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate our birthday than sharing it with the event of the year!

Culture night was also the same day as National Doodle Day, so to celebrate both events we had the very talented Collm from Nuffinc. in store who kindly drew caricatures of customers who called into the shop. Its safe to say, his portraits went down a storm as he had a queue the entire time he was here.

For the second year running our store was also the hub for Hit the North street art festival. This festival was established by @seedheadarts and the Community Arts partnership in 2013 as a response to the vacant space along North Street. Now in its fifth year, with the support of @becks, Hit the North has become one of the biggest street art festivals in Ireland, and this year it had an amazing line-up of over 35 artists from across Europe! The paint was supplied by Derry based company UV Arts, which has been used to transformed some of our tired walls into mini masterpieces.

For this month's First Thursdays event, we had an exclusive exhibition with local artist Stephen Fagan.
Faigy specialises in detailed acrylic canvas paintings created by traditionally by freehand painting. His pieces can swing between the dark and strange to the colourful and cute, and he has also crossed over into street art, using acrylic paints and spray paint to transfer his pop surrealist style art onto city centre shutters, gable walls, and many other large surfaces.

As part of the Cathedral Quarter event, Faigy set himself the challenge of painting a new canvas from scratch in just four days. He told us that usually he takes up to a month to paint a new piece, but he was determined to get it done. Faigy came to the store in the morning and painted in our shop window until closing each day, fuelled  by coffee and chocolate biscuits. It was great to have passers by stopping to watch him, and popping in and asking him about his work.

The first couple of days, he made great progress on the background and sketched the outline for the main body of the painting. By the morning of the fourth day he had finished... much to one photographers disappointment!

That evening, the finished canvas was on display in the window along with the rest of his work.
We have two of his pieces currently in store which will be here until the start of October.

You can also see one of his street art pieces on Upper North Street just down from the carpet company. He also took part in this years 'Hit the North' street art festival which took part over Culture night last week. His new piece is still a work- in-progress, but if you want to see it so far, you'll fine it on the side of the Library on Upper Donegall street.

    The Enlightened primate

Welcome to our blog! This is where we'll share ideas and insights that we’ve stumbled upon; the intellectual side of InkMonkey! Hopefully it’ll inspire you to question the establishment, challenge the status quo, and do whatever makes you happy. As well as talking about things that interest us, we’ll also be telling you about cool things we've done, places we've been, and people we've met.

TL;DR We think this stuff is really cool… we think you’ll think it’s really cool too!
